Canyon lands comprises of a huge sandstone wilderness which is cut by the great gorges and chasms. From all the appearances, this appears to be amongst earth’s arid places. Still, it has been faked by water. It can be described as a landscape showing deep-shadowed canyons, immense buff-colored pinnacles, dazzling orange mesas, and last, but not the least, maroon buttes. These buttes can be referred to as a concentrated pallet of naturally occurring colors which come alive during sunlight. The terrain appears to be surreal to the extent of giving a feeling of Salvador Dali’s painting. The natural array consisting of arches, needles and pillars made up of sandstone, canyon mazes, scraps, and many other features which make up Canyon lands National Park’s otherworldly terrain can be stated as work of Green and Colorado rivers. They form a great confluence, thereby giving the shape of ‘Y’, cutting around 1000 feet in to brightly hued sandstone. The rivers leave their identity behind after the confluence. The park can be divided in to 3 regions: The Maze, The Needles, and ‘The Island in the Sky’. The wildlife in these regions consists of small reptiles and desert mammals. The activities include hiking, rafting, boating, ranger-led talks and walks, bicycling, fishing, horseback riding, 4-wheel-drive tours, backpacking (with permission), and river-running trips. One can get accommodations at ‘Willow Flat Campground’ located in Island in Sky District, and ‘Squaw Flat Campground’ located in Needles District. Both of these are open all over the year. They are available on a ‘First-come, first-serve’ basis. |
